How to Use a Muscadet with Game

Muscadet is the wine of the lower Loire. For years, it was considered one of the poorer vatieties andit has recently enjoyed a renaissance The wine is very sensitive to soil differences, even in the lower Loire and is different depending on where it is grown. It should have a crisp, light refresing flavor that can be enjoyed with delicate tasting fish like sole and catfish as well as chicken, pheasant and turkey.

History and Characteristics

Muscadet should not be confused with Muscat or Muscatel. It is is another name for the Melon de Burgogne grape. The vineyards using Muscadet are the westernmost vineyards of France. The wines are crisp, and light so it is not surprising that it is used to compliment the seafood of the same region in which they were grown

Muscadet wines were established in the lower Loire in the XVIIème century. It got its controlled label of origin A.O.C. in 1936. The Muscadet wine Sèvre and Maine gets its name from the two rivers which cross the Nantes vineyards. Muscadets must be put in the bottle after only one winter. This is done before June 30. It is a traditionelle technique of the Nantes vineyards to preserve the freshness and of the wine.

Fifty degrees is the ideal temperature for Muscadet wine. They will keep up to three years following their harvest. Muscadet should also be kept away from light that will cause the wine to deteriorate.
